The Boeing B-17 became synonymous with the heavily armed strategic bomber during World War II, although with 12,677 aircraft it was far from being the most widely built machine of this type. Its name Flying Fortress was given to it by an American journalist after the first flight and it remained with it. The Boeing B-17F was the first Flying Fortress to be mass produced. The most famous aircraft from this series was the Boeing-built B-17F-10-BO, which was delivered on July 15, 1942 and entered service with the 324th Bomber Squadron, 91st Bomber Group at Bassingbourn, England. She was named Memphis Belle by her crew, after the girlfriend of pilot Lt. Robert K. Morgan. Her fame resulted from the fact that she officially became the first U.S. Army Air Force bomber to survive 25 missions in Europe and became the star of a Hollywood propaganda film.
