Revell Big Boy Locomotive

The Union Pacific Series 4000 (known as the Big Boy) is a series of steam locomotives built between 1941 and 1944 by ALCO (American Locomotive Company) in a total of 25 units. A single locomotive (without tender) is 85 feet (26.16 m) long and has a service weight of 1,300,000 pounds (548.3 tons). The locomotives had a rare 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement according to Whyte notation. The Union Pacific Series 4000 steam locomotives were built for the Union Pacific Railroad and are distinguished by several unique features. They are recognized as some of the largest and most powerful steam locomotives of the 20th century, and several sources highlight them in these areas. They were also the only locomotives with a 4-8-8-4 wheel arrangement, which was necessary due to their size and ability to haul heavy loads at high speeds, up to 80 mph (130 km/h). The locomotives were designed with safety in mind and were relatively easy to operate, making them well suited for use during World War II. The last of these steam locomotives was retired in 1959. Today, eight of the original 25 Big Boy locomotives produced are preserved as museum pieces.
